When I Watch You With Your Brother

I love to watch my oldest son and my youngest son play together. There are nine years between them. My oldest son is a very fun and loving older brother. Our youngest is two years old. He cannot pronounce his brother John’s name so he has made up a new name. He calls him “Ma”. One of my favourite things is watching the two of them together.

Thank you John, for being an amazing role model and older brother to Luke. This one is for you.

I flash forward to the future.  I picture you as a grown man with a young child yourself. It makes my heart swell with pride as I know you will be an amazing, loving and patient father. I pray you get to experience the joy of becoming a parent. You are an awesome older brother and I am confident that you will be a great father.

I smile. I smile because it makes me so happy to see you together and I thank God for my boys. What a blessing you are.

I am reminded of how it was not long ago that you were toddling along like him as well. I see my boys at all stages of development now growing together at a speed I cannot slow down.

I accept the fact I now know to be true – that boys have an innate need for rough, physical play. As you playfully chase him and tackle him to the ground, he squeals in delight and the sound of your infectious laughter fills the room.

I am grateful that he has you.  I am grateful my children all have each other. “Brothers for life” I tell you. Family comes first. I hope you remain friends. I hope you always look out for him and that you are there for him when I am not.

I try to lock in these moments in my memory bank knowing all too soon he will be your age and we will be looking back at these photos and share stories of you all growing up together.

When I watch you with your brother

I realize what an incredible person you have become. You so lovingly take care of him, watch over him, and play with him. You make him laugh harder than anyone in our family.

You make me so proud.

I know you are right where you are supposed to be.
